Although Newport (Casnewydd) is Wales’ youngest city, it dates back 2000 years as a Celtic settlement and is known for its national pride, especially seen in its youth culture. The wider area of Newport is home to Britain’s most varied and fascinating Roman site at Caerleon and one of Britain’s most important historical houses, Tredegar House. The Celtic Manor Resort is also in Newport, which did host the Ryder Cup in 2010. Newport sports coarse fishing pools and game fishing reservoirs, and some great winter sea fishing.
