Powys North

The Printed version is available on Amazon or your from local tackle Shop

In Powys, you will find rolling countryside from the wide, open spaces of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the south to the wild beauty of the Berwyn Mountains in the north. Between those two mountain ranges, there’s much to discover – the rolling, timeless landscapes along the border, the many rivers and mountain streams, the characterful country towns and villages, and a rich history that embraces everything from mysterious prehistoric monuments to Victorian spa towns.

Three of Wales’ classic rivers – the Wye, Severn, and Usk – originate in Powys. The sources of the first two are only a few miles apart, hidden amongst the trees of the Hafren Forest high in the Cambrian Mountains to the west. From here, the Wye flows southwards through Rhayader, Builth Wells, and Hay in a lovely valley, wild at first but maturing into rich farmland along the way.

The majestic Severn flows through Llanidloes, Newtown, and Welshpool, its wide, verdant vale a natural – and most inviting -gateway into Wales. The Usk begins life in the moors of the western Black Mountain, then creates a major landscape feature in the National Park by carving a spectacular valley through the mountains on its course from Brecon to Crickhowell.

The many lakes are the major feature of Powys, famously the Elan Valley west of Rhayader, where a string of reservoirs blends harmoniously with their rugged surroundings in the mountains. These lakes have been attracting visitors since they were created at the turn of the century to supply water to Birmingham in England. The lakes form a centerpiece for a vast wildlife reserve, renowned for the beauty of its mountains, moors, oakwoods, and prolific birdlife. The excellent Elan Valley Visitor Centre offers a fascinating introduction.

The Welsh River Severn in Powys

The River Severn is the longest river in Britain. It rises in the mountains of Wales and follows a circuitous route for over 200 miles before reaching the Bristol Channel and the sea. The Welsh part of the Seven is called Afon Hafren. Over its length, there are a large number of tributaries,The first tributary of significance is the Afon Dulas, joining from the south immediately upstream of Llanidloes, with the Afon Clywedog joining in the town. The Afon Cerist, bolstered by the Afon Trannon, and the Afon Carno join as left bank tributaries immediately upstream of Caersws. Mochdre Brook enters on the western edge of Newtown, followed by the Bechan Brook just northeast of the town. The Mule enters at Abermule, and the River Rhiw east of Berriew, followed shortly by the Camlad which rises above Churchstoke and by the Luggy Brook. The left bank Sylfaen Brook enters at Welshpool, and the Bele Brook via the New Cut east of Arddlin. The River Vyrnwy, which begins at Lake Vyrnwy, flows eastwards through Powys, gathering the waters of the Banwy, Cain and Tanat, before forming part of the border between England and Wales, and joining the Severn near Melverley, Shropshire. The River Perry joins on the left bank above Shrewsbury
